The Dreaded Facebook

I really don't understand it at all. However, with The Top Shelf Flea looming large, I finally managed to get the Facebook page up and running. Find the link over in the sidebar.

Note this only a "page" for An Affordable Wardrobe and not a personal profile. I don't relish the thought of every person I've ever had the vaguest connection with tracking me down and "friending" me. I don't get the obsession with that either.

Anyway, I don't want to get all sour grapes about it, so I'll stop now. Check it out and "fan me up".

(Yuck, did I really just say that?)

  1. You have been "fanned up," as it were.

I'm sorry you had to cave… it should be decent for spreading the word though.

You are missing the beauty of it. The relationship stops with the Facebook friending and optional greeting via private message. It is an excellent way of keeping acquaintances at arm's length. It is a paradox. Because you are always just a click away from being contacted, you will not be contacted.

  3. Sorry G, I can't and I won't. Just picture yourself on Dr. Phil someday justifying your friends to Mrs. G. on worldwide TV. May not be pretty.

  4. Re: Facebook- it is kind of fun when ex girlfriends look you up.

    Trust me on this.

  5. Facebook has its uses, but I still find it a bit weird now that it's gone from being somewhere where only people I've met in real life friend me to somewhere where people friend me just because I'm interested in the same stuff as them...

  6. It's very useful for promoting websites, that's for sure! My site traffic has tripled since creating a Facebook page for it. People recommend it to their friends, and to their friends, and to their friends, and pretty soon you have hundreds and hundreds of fans. Word of mouth marketing at its best.

  7. Sean,

What does your wife have to say about that? (smile)

Facebook is also known to some as "Facecrack" for its addictiveness--but isn't that true of the 'net in general?

I have reconnected to some old friends on Facebook, and it's nice, but I don't get involved in all the silly games or votes or other such nonsense.

You just have to figure out how much of it to use, and how much time you're willing to spend (waste?) on it.

    Good luck, G!

  8. Facebook is a little creepy, but i joined to keep up on stuff happening in the 'hood.

Just yesterday, it gave me a friend suggestion of someone I haven't seen for years. There's no record of him on either of my computers, no mutual friends, no connection, but there he was. I was thrilled to be reconnected, but a little wierded out as to how his name came up... we don't even live on the same continent!

  9. Aw, my "curmudgeon" comment didn't get approved? I hope it's because I didn't successfully send it rather than you don't like being called a curmudgeon. I mean, that's a 50 cent word if there ever was one (well, maybe 5 dollar word, what with inflation and all).

  10. Gregorius,

That comment never turned up. I publish nearly all comments. I really only use moderation to keep out the spam.

People call me names all the time. Curmudgeon is almost a compliment. Somebody called me a prig on here just the other day, and that's only a 25 cent word on a day with a good exchange rate.

  11. Ha ha ha! That's what I figured. I've been having some router trouble lately. Now if only I could hire a couple of young bachelorettes to sit in a closet and handle all of my packet exchanges. *That* would be a new take on an old classic.

Time for some more Mad Men, I guess.
