A Mild Case of Schizophrenia

What can you do when old Ma Nature gets all schizo, bringing you nice sunny days, freezing cold in the morning, then warm, then sort of chilly? Respond in kind:
Wide wale go-to-hell kelly green cords, paired with topsiders and bare ankles, as worn on Tuesday. (the pants are the same length, and not that short. It's just the way I bent over to snap the photo...don't get smart)

On Wednesday, a Barbour jacket over a tennis shirt. Until recently, I would have thought the warm weather shirt and the cool weather jacket wouldn't play well together. Then I got this email from a reader in England saying something about this being the uniform of Liverpool soccer fans. Not that I strive to dress like a Liverpool soccer fan, but why not? Imagine if you went to a Red Sox/ Yankees game and this was the common mode of dress...just sayin'...
A pinch (just a pinch) of schizophrenia is alright by me. Just keep it in check.

  1. I see so many versons of barbour coats and jackets that I think we've lost touch with the traditional verson. I like tradition. Perhapse you could do a small posting of what defines traditional barbours (if there is indeed such a thing). Thanks for making me more into clothes!

  2. Well placed caveat...we were all going to comment on the trouser length....seemed out of character for you.

  3. Hey G,

On a technical note, Schizophrenia and Multiple Personality Disorder are two entirely different classes of mental disorders. Schizophrenia means you're delusional and you hear voices and/or hallucinate. Multiple Personality Disorder means that your identity is split and you go back and forth between your identities. I think you actually meant to say that you and the weather have a mild case of the latter:

  5. I'm not certain that schizophrenia is the best term, but I know what you mean. The mixing of seemingly-incompatible elements has a long pedigree. Everyone's favorite whipping boy, the Duke of Windsor, did it all the time. He wore loafers with suits (shocking!); he wore spectator loafers with suits (I'm scandalized!); he wore suits made of country cloth with city details, and vice versa (gasp!).

Once we've mastered the basics, we can do the same, at varying levels. G's doing it by mixing clothes from different seasons. Can't wait to see your white bucks paired with tweed!

  6. Matt,

Let's be fair and note that there is considerable evidence in favor of the notion that multiple personality disorder is iatrogenic, as it has almost never been diagnosed outside of the US.

Not to cast aspersions on the profession, but given that some psychiatric patients will get well in about two years without Freudian psychoanalysis, or in about two years with it, one must wonder if they really know what they're doing.

But enough of the trivia. Let's get back to something important and meaningful: let's get back to the clothes.

  7. Being from Boston, one would just decribe any mental disorder as "Schizo".

example: "He went all schizo on me."

  8. Oooh, boy, are you asking for it. Posting outfits with a mix of warm and cold weather clothes seems to always be met with smart ass remarks, e.g.: "Yeah, I'm always finding that my trunk is cold, but my ankles are too warm." The glories of the in-between season are lost on these narrow-minded people. I believe we have encountered them mid-way in their evolution towards the only "rational" clothing choices: a speedo and sandals for temperatures 75 and above, and an arctic exposure suit for 75 and below. Anything else is a ridiculous mixture.

  11. No matter what the weather I can never really manage sockless, I feel more undressed without socks.
As the weather blows hot and cold, literally(yes it's yo-yoing here in Europe too), I still pull on my socks in the morning and keep them on unless I have occasion to change them.

  12. You could say, "he went all schizo on me" or another personal regional favorite, "Motha naytcha pulled a wicked nutty the otha day"

Thanks for a great blog - some need An Affordable Wardrobe more than the blogs needs them. Your style is well for lack of a better word....timeless. Unfortunately for me I fall into the later class....I have this paid of flannel Zanella slacks in blue that are still very very comfortable ....I don't care what the naysayers state....Also, keep up the cocktails section.
