Capturing a Rare Bird

In thrift shopping, persistemce is everything. True, it can be a good way of keeping yourself in blue and white shirts, grey slacks and striped ties. But if you're lucky, without really trying, you might wind up bagging a truly rare bird.
My love of the classic university striped shirt is certainly no secret, and I have many, mostly in the standard blue and white. Finding one in the elusive shade of yellow once known as "Goldenrod" is a real treat.
Especially when it's an old one from the Brothers, likely late 1960s/early 1970s judging from this label, the much beloved long pointed, unlined collar,

and the six button front. All the details are right, and this one is actually in astoundingly good shape.

A rare bird indeed. But what I do is not taxidermy, and this one should see plenty of wear with navy blazers and tweed jackets as we head into Fall. $1.99 well spent.

p.s. the same expedition that netted this shirt also catured some other bits of finery. Look for them soon in the Shop, as soon as I resolve some minor technical difficulties on my end.

Grabbed an identical shirt over the weekend in a thrift shop that shall remain undisclosed (not that you don't already know them all). Great collar and cloth, just can't abide the tent fit though, and I am by no means a tight shirt kind of guy.

Wow, I like that shirt. Reminds me of a white and yellow striped Lacoste shirt I had years ago that seems to have vanished whilst I was on an extended period of travelling... A very lucky find.

You have inspired me to take a sneaky peak through the racks of my local thrift stores over the next week. I do so hope that I might be as lucky!

Another wonderful find. Would that we could find shirts as nice as that one new!

I have a couple of yellow shirts (one striped, one gingham). I love 'em. The predictable pairing is with brown, and of course that works well. However, I prefer to wear them with gray and navy--both great combinations.

I'll never understand why the Brooks Boys dropped that color along with the pink and green.

Anonymous,

Because they got bought out by people more interested in the name than what that name represented.

That's BB's relatively new tag on shirts. Not only is it impossible for the shirt to be from the 1960s, but it's likely within the 21st century.
