Thrift Shop Tyrolean

You really do find the damnedest things in the chaos of the thrift shop sometimes...
...such as a Tyrolean cape coat, made of real loden wool, dark green on one side, reversible to red plaid on the other...
...complete with antler buttons...

...and big wide cape sleeves. It's a beautiful, rare and wonderful thing, but I fear it may be too much, even for me. I'd like to think I could make this work, but sometimes you just gotta be realistic. I'm not an old man from the Alps, or even David Niven for that matter.

If anybody needs me, I'll be in the mountains looking for Pinocchio. If I I'm not home by supper, send out a St. Bernard with a cask of brandy on his neck, I prefer Bas Armagnac, but Cognac will do as well.

  1. Very nice.

No one bats an eye at flip-flops, but a cape makes a man an outcast. That's the world we're facing each day when we walk out the door.

  2. Do not dare selling it! I have a loden overcoat (from a thrift store), I'd kill for a reversible loden cape!
As I live near the alps, I'll probably find one, soon or later.

  3. It's amazing! Wear it, and the flop-flop wearers be damned!

  4. Elementary my dear Watson! A great find. I think it looks fine and that you should wear it. With a pair of rich brown leather gloves.
I have a cape coat from Dunn & Co. Probably from the late 50s or early 60s. (Two tiny moth holes, luckily on the inside). I wear it on those bright, blue-sky winter days. And for the record, I'm only 36.

  5. If you want to sale it, I want it! And, I promise to wear it plaid side out more than half the time!

    Great find! Cheers!

  6. Too much is just enough - that is wonderful!

  7. Damn, now I want one. I'd say wear it open and complete the look with a pipe. Nothing wrong with looking eccentric.

  8. Fantastic! Wear it in snow (if we ever get any).

  9. If you're going to wear it, at least wear it plaid side out!

  10. Let's see the plaid side.

  11. The hills are alive...

That is insane. An insanely great find, but still insane. What are you going to find at your local thrift shops next--lederhosen?

It seems just the thing for an outing to the country during the cooler months. I'm sure you'll find a way to wear it, public opinion be hanged.

  12. If you set foot outside your house in that thing, you're going to spend your whole day deflecting projectiles.

  13. I found a gorgeous women's loden coat the other day. weighed a TON and had the great silver buttons. It was a wee bit snug, but I should have bought it anyway... someone I know would have wanted it.

  14. I love it on you!

Please don't get rid of it - it is soooo stylish.

If you feel too young right now, just store it. You will be older soon enough (take my word for it!) and you can enjoy it then.

BTW, did I mention that I think that you look great in it NOW?

  16. C'mon gang, it's a funky old coat and all, but don't encourage him...think of his poor wife.

  17. It's simultaneously awesome and insane. I don't think you can really justify wearing it in the city, but it could be fun in the countryside -WDM

  18. Anon. 7:58,

Finally, the voice of reason steps in. While I appreciate your thinking of Mrs. G, I should tell you that she was the first to suggest I keep it.

    Keohane,
You know better than most people here that projectiles have never stopped me before.

  19. That could be a slippery slope: loden capecoat (Great, BTW), Tyrolean hat, then....LEDERHOSEN!

  20. The only proper accessory: a half-consumed liter of beer.

  21. I do believe cape of any sort is past-time, whether it is city or countryside. The rare exception maybe old gentlemen.

  25. Keep it and wear it. The streets of Boston would benefit from the marvelous and eccentric sight!
