Better Than a Baseball Cap

Is there such a thing as a cricket hooligan? Probably not, but if there was, they might look something like this:
I was recently sent this lovely cricket cap from Smart Turnout, an English company producing regimental ties, cricket sweaters, striped watch bands, these caps, and a thousand kinds of socks. Seriously, the sock page is full blown geeked out menswear accessory porn. Be careful. They were actually kind enough to let me choose something from their site, and I went with the cricket cap as it's the thing I'm least likely to find in a thrift store.

Smart Turnout's goods are all British made of quality materials. If this hat is any indicator, it's pretty solid stuff. The cap is made of heavy British weather grade wool, with bullet proof construction. All of their goods are based on regimental or university designs. To be honest, I'm sometimes conflicted about stuff like that, but mostly I'm over it. I won't wear a uniform or emblem I didn't earn, but stripes have been all over the place for way too long now. Why miss out?

The stuff is not cheap, but it's very cool, and Christmas is coming. Ladies, the gifts for your man abound here. Gents, start dropping hints. Smart Turnout has been kind enough to offer readers of An Affordable Wardrobe 20% off their order through this Friday, November 12, and 10% throughout the following week by using discount code BROCHURE2010 at checkout. Hurry.

Seriously, the sock page...dangerous.

Cricket hooligans? Well, yes, actually, but generally they've been limited to India/Pakistan games, and the trouble has had little to do with the game. Bigger problem these days is cricket's association with cheating, which is, to be frank, not cricket! If anyone is interested: beingmanly: cricket cheats. In any case, the cap looks dapper enough. Not much protection against a bouncer on the bonce, I imagine.

Appreciate the discount notification. I've been eyeing up a pair of their enamel cufflinks with the insignia of my alma mater since coming across their webpage this past summer. 20% off seals the deal.

Wearing a Yale cap in Cambridge... dangerous

Smart Turnout has a school tie from my Alma Mater, the U of Edinburgh. I am pleased that I can wear a British school stripe with the stripes going the other way, as an American, no less.

Terribly sorry to have to write this but the cap makes you look like a total knob. No need for something like this when you normally sport such lovely hats and caps.

The Yale colors are what they sent me, and I felt it would be gauche to be picky about a freebie. Wearing Yale colors in Cambridge would be dangerous, if anybody currently at Harvard knew about this stuff, which is unlikely these days. I will however stay out of Harvard Square the weekend of Harvard/Yale football.

Zach,
Real British striped ties are rarity. I agree it's refreshing to be able to get the stripes running left to right.

Love the cap, Yale colors or not. The Andover Shop used to sell cricket caps. Don't know if they still do. Please check out my bog The Emperor's New Clothes at http://enc2010.blogspot.com/

I grew up in Belmont, and have lived in St.Louis ever since receiving my masters in architecture from Washington University in 1988.

No offense, but it's embarrassing to read bloggers describing the free stuff. They all sound like Andy Shillcrist. I don't read your blog to learn your opinion of remarkably useless stuff you get for free in the mail. You aren't a hack, and you care about the clothes and your blog. You should say no thanks when they email and refuse to accept their packages.

I don't see anything wrong with letting folks in on a coupon for some nice stuff just before Christmas. Besides, I like the hat.

One thing that always drove me nuts about punk rock, much as I love it, is this idea that you have to toil in poverty over everything all the time in order to be legitimate. The minute anybody gets anything for doing something, someone is out there ready to call the a shill.

In case you're wondering, I do turn down free stuff all the time, by far more often than I accept it. Sometimes I get free stuff that really isn't up to my standards, so I don't write about it, always offering to send it back. If I write about anything here it's because I think it's a worthy product, not because I'm a shill for hire.

I guess you only read this blog to hear me describe the remarkably useless stuff that I bought.

I put a lot of time and effort into this blog, and a lot of people read it. I don't get paid for it, so cut a guy some slack, will ya?

No offense, just sayin'.

That's exactly right. The blog is called "Affordable Wardrobe"? Certainly "free" is affordable, though you have to build and maintain a blog to take advantage of it.

These clothes are beautiful! I love the cricket sweaters. Too bad I wasn't a reader when you posted the discount... looks like I'll be saving up for some stuff.

Thanks for posting!
